What Law Firm Marketing Actually Costs in 2026
Ask five agencies what law firm marketing costs and you will get five ranges wide enough to be meaningless. The reason is that a personal injury firm in Phoenix and an estate planning firm in Tucson are not in the same business, and averaging them produces a number that describes neither.
A more useful way to think about budget is to work backwards from what a signed matter is worth to you, then decide what share of that you are willing to spend to acquire one.
Start with case value, not with a budget
If your average signed matter produces four thousand dollars in fees and you are comfortable spending fifteen percent to acquire it, your target is six hundred dollars per signed matter. If your consultation to signed rate is one in three, your target cost per consultation is two hundred dollars. If half your inquiries become consultations, your target cost per inquiry is a hundred.
Now you can evaluate any channel honestly. A campaign producing inquiries at eighty dollars is working. One producing them at three hundred is not, no matter how good the click through rate looks in the report.
What clicks actually cost
Personal injury remains the most expensive legal advertising in the country, with core accident terms running from fifty dollars into the hundreds in major metros. Criminal defense typically sits lower but climbs sharply around specific charges. Family law is moderate. Estate planning and probate are comparatively inexpensive, which is one reason those practices are better served by content, seminars and mail than by bidding.
The number that matters is not the click price, though. It is what fraction of clicks become inquiries and what fraction of inquiries become clients, and those are determined by your landing page and your intake far more than by your bid.
The line item most firms forget
Intake. A firm spending ten thousand a month on advertising and losing a third of its calls to voicemail is throwing away more than most agency fees. Before increasing a budget, find out what happens to a call at nine on a Saturday night. That answer usually produces a bigger return than any change to the ad account.
A reasonable starting range
For most single office firms in a mid sized market, a serious program lands somewhere between five and fifteen thousand dollars a month across media and management, weighted heavily toward media. Below that, coverage is usually too thin to produce reliable data. Above it, the constraint shifts to whether your firm can handle the matters.
Whatever the figure, insist that reporting shows cost per signed matter. Anything measured only in clicks or form fills is measuring activity, not results.
