Estate Planning Marketing for Military Retirees

By , Co Founder, NEXU Legal Marketing

Military retirees are one of the most valuable and most underserved estate planning audiences in Hampton Roads. The region has one of the largest retiree populations in the country, and their plans involve benefits and rules that most estate planning marketing never mentions. Firms that speak to those issues specifically earn trust quickly; firms offering a generic will package compete on price.

What makes a retiree's plan different

Retirees made a Survivor Benefit Plan election at retirement that determines what a surviving spouse receives, and that election interacts with the rest of the plan. Many receive VA disability compensation, which has its own rules and interacts with long-term care and Medicaid planning. Surviving spouses may rely on TRICARE eligibility and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. Some have remarried after a career of moves, creating blended families where beneficiary designations and SBP elections from years ago no longer match current intentions.

Retirees also often own property in more than one state, or hold a legal residence elsewhere from their service years, which raises questions about which state's law governs the plan.

Content that earns the call

Write pages and articles that name these issues directly: how SBP works with a revocable trust, what happens to VA benefits when a veteran needs nursing care, how to update beneficiary designations after remarriage, and what a surviving spouse should expect from DFAS and the VA. Keep the tone calm and precise. Retirees respond to competence, not urgency.

Seminars work well for this audience. Presentations at retiree associations, veterans organizations and community centers in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Hampton build familiarity that online content reinforces later.

Referral partners

Financial advisors who serve military retirees, CPAs, and veterans service officers who help with VA claims are natural referral partners. They see clients at moments when planning becomes urgent: a diagnosis, a death, a move. Offer them something useful, such as a one-page guide to SBP and estate planning, rather than a request for referrals.

Targeting

Retirees cluster near bases and in communities with strong military ties across Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk and the Peninsula. Paid search should include terms combining estate planning with military, veteran, SBP and VA. Facebook and newsletter campaigns reach spouses and adult children who often start the conversation.

Measuring it

Estate planning decisions take months. Track seminar attendance, newsletter growth and the source of retained clients, and ask every new client how they first heard of the firm. Last-click analytics alone will undervalue the work that actually produces these clients.
