The Law Firm Marketing Plan You Will Actually Follow
By Blake Lannan, Co Founder, NEXU Legal Marketing
A law firm marketing plan you will actually follow fits on one page, starts with the calls you already get, adds one channel at a time and measures everything in signed cases. Most plans fail because they try to do eight things at once and measure none of them properly.
Step 1: fix intake before spending more
Call your own firm after hours. Submit your own web form on a Saturday. Time the callback. If calls go to voicemail or forms wait until Monday, new marketing will mostly buy missed opportunities. Write simple rules: who answers, how fast, what they ask, and what happens when the prospect does not book.
Step 2: decide which cases you want
Write down the two or three case types you want more of, the ones you want fewer of, your service area and how many new matters you can handle per month. Every channel decision follows from this.
Step 3: pick one channel that matches how those clients choose
Urgent practices such as criminal defense and personal injury usually start with paid search and a strong Google Business Profile. Relationship practices such as estate planning and probate usually start with referral partners, reviews and a newsletter. Pick one, give it ninety days and measure it.
Step 4: measure signed cases, not clicks
Track every inquiry to its outcome: not qualified, consultation, retained. Calculate cost per retained client by channel. If you run Google Ads, import signed cases back into the account so the system learns which searches produce clients.
Step 5: add the next channel only when the first one works
When the first channel produces signed cases at an acceptable cost, add the next one. When it does not, fix or cut it before adding anything. The discipline is boring and it works.
The one-page plan
Target cases. Service area. Monthly capacity. Intake rules. Current channel and its cost per retained client. Next channel and the date you will decide on it. Review it monthly. That is the plan.
